The Reality of Local SEO Testing
Most review sites aggregate features from a vendor pricing page. They rewrite marketing copy and call it an evaluation. That approach fails completely in the local SEO space. Google Maps optimization requires physical verification. You have to push data into the ecosystem, watch the algorithm react, measure the fallout.
We built 3 Pack Ranking Pro to document actual ranking strategies. Our review process reflects that mission. We treat every software tool and tactic as a variable in a live experiment. We isolate the variable, apply it to a real business profile, measure the output.
How We Select What to Cover
We ignore bloated SEO suites. If a tool or service doesn’t directly impact local map rankings, it doesn’t belong here. We select targets based on three strict categories. Review management platforms, citation building services, CTR manipulation networks.
Our team looks for tools that save time, tactics that move the needle, services that actually deliver. We scour private forums and Facebook groups to see what practitioners actually buy. When a new grid tracker hits the market, we purchase a subscription. We don’t accept sponsored placements for reviews.
If a company offers us a free account, we decline it and pay out of pocket. This keeps our data clean. We owe software vendors nothing. Our loyalty belongs entirely to the SEO professionals and business owners trying to dominate their local markets.
Our Evaluation Criteria
We measure success through raw ranking movement. A tool is useless if it looks pretty but fails to expand a listing proximity radius. We deploy the software or tactic on a test batch of three live Google Business Profiles. We track the baseline metrics using local grid trackers before we start.
Our team monitors three specific metrics. Indexing speed for new citations. Review retention rates for reputation software. Proximity expansion on a five by five mile grid. We want to see how far away a searcher can stand and still trigger the 3 Pack.
We track the grid until it turns green.
We also evaluate the friction of implementation. If a review generation tool requires a developer to set up, your clients won’t use it. We document the exact time it takes from account creation to the first live campaign. We note every bug, every confusing interface choice, every delayed support response.
Support infrastructure matters just as much as the software features. When a Google Business Profile gets suspended, you need immediate answers. We send test tickets to vendor support teams and clock their response times. We look for actual human replies, not automated knowledge base links.
The Time Investment
Local SEO requires patience. You can’t evaluate a citation campaign in a weekend. We commit a minimum of 45 days to every tool or tactic we review. Some tests run for 90 days.
The first two weeks involve setup and baseline tracking. Days 15 through 30 involve active deployment. The final two weeks are pure observation. Google’s algorithm takes time to digest local signals.

Rushing a review leads to false positives. A sudden spike in rankings triggers a temporary algorithmic filter. We wait out the Google dance. We only report on the rankings that stick after the initial volatility fades.
What We Do NOT Review
We draw a hard line on what gets published. We refuse to review mass spam tools that trigger instant profile suspensions. If a tactic relies on stuffing business names with fake keywords to the point of a manual penalty, we ignore it.
If it burns a listing, we blacklist it.
Broad enterprise SEO platforms also fail our selection criteria. You don’t need a five thousand dollar monthly subscription to rank a local plumber. We focus exclusively on tools built for local practitioners, agency owners, and small businesses.
We reject theoretical courses that lack actionable steps. We have no patience for training programs that simply read Google’s public guidelines out loud. If a product doesn’t offer a distinct operational advantage, it doesn’t make the cut.
