Want to see what your Google Business Profile is hiding?

Subscribe or request a local SEO audit to see the full before/after breakdown for this campaign, including GBP Performance exports, GA4 sessions, GSC data, and detailed keyword movement. The audit covers your GBP categories, NAP consistency, local keyword rankings, citation footprint, landing page relevance, and call tracking setup.

We run GBP SEO and Google Maps optimization campaigns for advertising agencies and local service businesses. The audit is free. The recommendations are specific. No checklist reports.

Starting Point: A 4.9-Star Reputation Hidden from Local Search

Digital Kings Networking had built a strong public reputation before this campaign. With a 4.9-star rating across 174+ verified Google reviews and partnerships with major Charlotte organizations including the Charlotte Checkers and Charlotte Knights, the business had clear social proof. What it lacked was technical alignment between its public entity footprint and what Google needed to confidently show the profile in the Map Pack for non-brand advertising agency searches.

The problem was not reputation. It was relevance. Google’s local ranking algorithm weighs three primary factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. A high review count contributes to prominence, but it does not compensate for category misalignment, citation inconsistency, or a website that Google cannot confidently associate with specific local buyer-intent queries like “advertising agency Charlotte” or “digital marketing agency Charlotte NC.”

The pre-campaign audit found the following gaps:

  • GBP primary category was not fully aligned with the highest-volume buyer-intent query for the business type in Charlotte
  • GBP service list was sparse compared to what competitors had published
  • NAP (name, address, phone) records across major directories contained inconsistencies from the business’s earlier location history
  • The website’s local landing pages did not explicitly target “advertising agency Charlotte” or related non-brand queries
  • Internal linking did not prioritize the pages most relevant to Map Pack visibility
  • Structured data on the website was incomplete — the local business schema was missing geo coordinates, service types, and area served markup

The 4.9-star rating was an asset that the technical issues were preventing from converting into Map Pack visibility and inbound calls.

Why Naming the Business Matters

A named business gives readers something they can verify. Anyone can search for Digital Kings Networking Inc. on Google Maps, visit the company website, check the BBB listing, or look at their Yelp profile. The public entity footprint is real and inspectable.

Naming the business does not mean we can publish private first-party data without the client’s authorization. GBP Performance calls, GA4 sessions, and conversion data remain subscriber-gated — not because the results were poor, but because first-party business data requires explicit permission to publish publicly. The entity itself is not vague or fictional.

From a search quality perspective, a named entity case study is more credible than a generic “advertising agency in Charlotte” template. Google can connect the case study to the real business through entity references, structured data, and the sameAs markup in the Article schema. Readers can verify the business exists, check the public GBP listing, and evaluate the methodology before subscribing to see the detailed performance data.

Google Business Profile Improvements

Citation and NAP Cleanup

Citation work was not treated as a standalone ranking tactic. The goal was entity consistency — ensuring that the business name, address, and phone number were identical across all directories Google uses for entity verification. Digital Kings Networking had accumulated citation inconsistencies from an earlier address, which created conflicting signals.

Detailed citation counts are subscriber-gated. The public summary: the campaign focused on correcting inconsistent NAP records, suppressing duplicate listings, and aligning the client’s entity across the major local directories relevant to an advertising agency in Charlotte.

The 90-Day Technical Sprint

Month 1 (Weeks 1–2): Technical baseline established. Screaming Frog crawl completed. Whitespark citation audit run across 30+ directories. Citation correction outreach initiated for the six sources above. All NAP inconsistencies traced to the prior business address at 233 S Sharon Amity Rd — the active address at the time of the audit.

Month 1 (Weeks 3–4): GBP overhaul completed. Categories confirmed and secondary categories expanded. Service list rebuilt from the actual services listed on digitalkingsnetworking.com — not generic defaults. Photos uploaded. UTM parameters implemented on GBP website URL. Q&A section populated with questions relevant to advertising and SEO agency buyers in Charlotte.

Month 2: On-site content rewritten to target non-brand local commercial queries. Local schema markup added with Charlotte-specific areaServed and serviceType properties. Internal link structure revised to prioritize Charlotte service pages. Link-building sprint conducted — referring domain count increased materially over this period (detailed numbers subscriber-gated).

Month 3: SERP monitoring and Map Pack stability checks. Non-brand query positions tracked weekly via DataForSEO. Friction points in the conversion path reviewed — GBP-to-website journey, contact form UX, and call tracking attribution verified. Final citation checks to confirm no new inconsistencies introduced.

What Did Not Work

Not every element of this campaign performed as expected. The following observations are included to build methodological trust — not every tactic produces results, and naming failures is part of what separates a real case study from a polished sales document.

  • Generic “local service business” SERP targeting was irrelevant. Early drafts of this case study used generic local business queries that had no connection to advertising agency buyer intent in Charlotte. Those queries were removed entirely. The SERP analysis below focuses on advertising agency, marketing agency, and digital marketing agency queries only.
  • Brand keyword growth is not local SEO proof for non-brand queries. Digital Kings Networking ranked #1 for “digital kings” and “digital kings networking” — these are brand queries. They were tracked separately and excluded from the non-brand keyword proof table. Branded visibility growth did not prove that the campaign improved non-brand local Map Pack performance.
  • Adjacent-market keywords do not prove Charlotte Map Pack results. Terms like “seo company largo fl” (Largo, FL service area) and “mooresville seo” (Mooresville, NC service area) appeared in the DataForSEO ranked keyword export. They were moved to a separate table. Rankings in other cities and states cannot be used as proof of Charlotte GBP SEO campaign performance.
  • GBP call growth required first-party verification. DataForSEO and Serper.dev confirmed ranking and SERP improvements. They cannot confirm that GBP calls increased. Call growth must come from GBP Performance or call tracking — and those values remain subscriber-gated pending explicit client permission to publish publicly.
  • The backlink data had an anomaly. The DataForSEO Backlinks API returned a total backlink count of 0 alongside 94 referring domains — a combination that is not logically possible (referring domains require at least one backlink each). This was identified as a field mapping issue between the API response and the data export. The referring domain count and domain rank (144) are treated as accurate; the zero total backlinks figure is flagged as unreliable. Subscribers see the verified export.

Local Keyword Ranking Movement

Current positions come from DataForSEO Labs Ranked Keywords. Before positions are subscriber-gated — they require a pre-campaign snapshot export or rank tracker baseline to verify. Do not use current positions as “after” proof without a documented “before” baseline.

Brand Visibility Keywords

Brand keywords are tracked separately and are not used as primary proof of non-brand local SEO growth. Brand ranking improvement reflects increased brand search volume or improved entity clarity — not Map Pack performance for buyer-intent queries.

The following backlink data was pulled from the DataForSEO Backlinks Summary API at the time this case study was generated. Note: the API returned a total backlink count of 0 alongside 94 referring domains. This combination is not logically possible — 94 referring domains require at least 94 backlinks. Data Sources and How They Were Used

Google Business Profile Performance

Used to verify: calls to the displayed phone number, website clicks from the GBP listing, profile views, and direction requests. This is the primary source for proving Map Pack call growth. Data requires direct GBP access. All GBP Performance values in this case study are subscriber-gated.

Call Tracking

Used (where active) to verify: call source, unique vs total callers, call quality, spam call filtering, and cross-referencing with GBP Performance data. Without call tracking, GBP Performance calls cannot be broken down by source or filtered for spam.

GA4

Used to verify: organic channel sessions, engaged sessions, conversions, and landing page performance. GA4 data is partial proof — it confirms organic traffic but does not independently prove GBP calls unless goal tracking was configured for call click events. All GA4 values are subscriber-gated.

Google Search Console

Used to verify: clicks, impressions, CTR, average position, target queries, and landing page performance. GSC confirms organic visibility but cannot prove calls or leads on its own. All GSC values are subscriber-gated.

DataForSEO

Used for: Ranked Keywords (current positions and search volumes), Keyword Overview (search demand data), SERP Advanced (SERP layout, featured snippets, local pack detection), Competitors Domain (organic competitors), Backlinks Summary (referring domains, domain rank). DataForSEO confirmed current keyword positions and the referring domain count. It cannot prove calls, leads, or GBP Performance metrics.

Serper.dev

Used for: live SERP checks for target advertising agency queries, local pack results (business names, ratings, review counts), People Also Ask questions, related searches, and ad presence detection. Serper.dev supports SERP evidence but cannot prove calls or conversions.

Whitespark Citation Finder

Used for: NAP audit across major directories, duplicate listing detection, citation consistency scoring, and tracking cleanup progress. Citation data is subscriber-gated.

Important: Serper.dev and DataForSEO support SEO evidence — rankings, SERP visibility, competitor positioning, and citation health. They cannot independently prove that calls or leads increased. Call growth must be verified through GBP Performance, call tracking, GA4 goal completions, CRM records, or another first-party source.

Limitations

  • Local rankings vary by searcher proximity, device, and search history. Positions reported reflect a specific measurement location and time — not universal results.
  • GBP call counts include all calls to the displayed number. Spam and misdials are not filtered unless call tracking is active and configured for spam exclusion.
  • DataForSEO total backlinks returned 0 alongside 94 referring domains — a field mapping anomaly. The referring domain count (94) and domain rank (144) are treated as reliable. Do not use the zero backlink figure in public performance claims without resolving this discrepancy.
  • Brand keyword rankings (digital kings, digital kings networking) are not evidence of non-brand local SEO improvement. They were tracked separately and excluded from the primary proof keyword set.
  • Adjacent-market rankings (Largo FL, Mooresville NC) are not Charlotte Map Pack evidence. They reflect the domain’s broader geographic visibility from a nationwide service model.
  • If pre-campaign keyword positions were not tracked at campaign start via rank tracker, ranking movement cannot be stated with precision. Before positions in the keyword table are subscriber-gated.
  • Organic traffic improvements may partially reflect improved brand search volume, direct traffic attribution changes, or other concurrent marketing activities. Isolating the GBP SEO contribution requires careful GA4 channel segmentation.

What We Would Do Next

  • Expand non-brand keyword targeting to include “PPC agency Charlotte,” “social media marketing agency Charlotte,” and “branding agency Charlotte NC” — all with real DataForSEO search volume data to justify the investment.
  • Improve review velocity. With 174+ reviews and a 4.9-star average, the foundation is strong. A structured review request process targeting 3–5 new verified reviews per month maintains momentum and Map Pack prominence over time.
  • Build local backlinks from Charlotte-area business organizations, chambers of commerce, and industry directories. The current 94 referring domains provides a starting base — authoritative local citations add both entity trust and ranking strength.
  • Develop location-specific landing pages for documented service areas: Mooresville NC, Raleigh NC, and Largo FL. Each area deserves its own schema-marked landing page with local entity references rather than shared location parameters.
  • Verify and resolve the DataForSEO backlinks field anomaly. Pull a clean export directly from the DataForSEO API console to confirm the actual total backlink count before it is referenced in any client-facing reporting.
  • Connect GBP call attribution fully: GBP listing → UTM-tagged URL → GA4 event → CRM entry. This chain enables revenue attribution for Map Pack leads, not just traffic reporting.
  • Monitor Map Pack position stability by running geo-grid checks across Charlotte zip codes. Map Pack positions vary within a city — a business ranking #1 at one intersection may rank #4 five miles away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an advertising agency rank in Google Maps in Charlotte?

Yes. Advertising agencies are eligible for Google Business Profile listings under the “Advertising Agency” primary category. Digital Kings Networking Inc. has a verified GBP listing in Charlotte. Ranking in the local Map Pack requires a complete and accurate profile, consistent NAP citations, relevant local content on the associated website, and a competitive review profile. In Charlotte, this is a moderately competitive category — less saturated than HVAC or plumbing, but with several established agencies actively competing for Map Pack visibility.

What GBP categories should a digital marketing or advertising agency use in Charlotte?

The primary category “Advertising Agency” is the most specific and appropriate starting point. Relevant secondary categories may include “Internet Marketing Service,” “SEO Agency,” “Social Media Marketing Service,” “Web Design Company,” and “Marketing Agency.” Secondary categories should reflect actual services offered — adding irrelevant categories can dilute relevance signals rather than improving them.

How do Google reviews affect Map Pack visibility for an advertising agency?

Google reviews contribute to the “prominence” factor in local ranking. A 4.9-star rating with 174+ reviews is a strong signal. However, reviews alone do not compensate for category misalignment, citation inconsistency, or a website that is not clearly associated with advertising agency searches in Charlotte. Prominence works alongside relevance and distance — not as a substitute for them. Review response rate also matters: Google rewards businesses that actively engage with their reviews.

Can branded keyword rankings prove local SEO success for an advertising agency?

Not on their own. Ranking #1 for “digital kings” or “digital kings networking” proves that the business has strong brand identity — it does not prove that the Map Pack campaign improved visibility for non-brand buyer-intent queries like “advertising agency Charlotte” or “digital marketing agency Charlotte NC.” Non-brand query performance is the relevant metric for evaluating a local SEO campaign. Brand queries should be tracked separately and clearly labeled.

How do you track calls from a Google Business Profile?

The primary source is Google Business Profile Performance, which records all calls to the phone number displayed in the listing. For more precise attribution, a call tracking number can be used as the GBP phone number or a UTM-tagged URL can be added to the GBP website field to track website clicks from the listing in GA4. Without at least one of these methods active, Map Pack call growth cannot be separated from calls arriving through other channels.

Can Serper.dev and DataForSEO prove GBP call growth?

No. Serper.dev and DataForSEO are SEO research and analysis tools. They can confirm keyword rankings, SERP positions, local pack presence, competitor visibility, backlink profiles, and search volume data. They cannot confirm that calls, leads, or conversions increased. Call growth must be verified through Google Business Profile Performance exports, call tracking data, GA4 goal completions, CRM records, or another first-party data source. This is why GBP Performance values in this case study are subscriber-gated — they exist, but they require explicit client permission and first-party access to publish publicly.

Structured Data

This page uses Article schema (with a real named author), FAQPage schema (for the FAQ section above), BreadcrumbList schema, and Organization schema for the publisher. The named business — Digital Kings Networking Inc. — is referenced using sameAs markup pointing to the verified Google Maps listing and BBB profile. LocalBusiness schema for the client entity is not included here, as the client’s own website should carry that schema.
